Tokyo
Cost of life in Tokyo - Affordable living, unforgettable experience.
At first glance, Japan – and especially Tokyo – might look like an expensive place to live. But in reality, the cost of living here is very manageable for students who prepare a little in advance.
Compared with other major cities around the world, Tokyo is actually more affordable than you might expect:
– Tokyo rent and daily costs are much lower than big cities like London, New York or Paris
– Eating out in Japan is really cheap (600 yen to 1500 yen to eat at a restaurant)
– Public transport is clean, reliable, and not as costly as many European capitals and North American big cities
So while Japan has a reputation for being pricey, the truth is: with smart planning, living and studying here is not only possible — it’s often more affordable than other big international cities.
Here below are two diagrams that show the result of the study made by JASSO, which stands for the Japan Student Services Organization, in 2023. This study about the average monthly cost of living for main areas of Japan and the breakdown of the average monthly cost of living.
This school being in the Tokyo area, the cost of living is slightly higher (mainly for the housing cost) with an average of 130.000yen to live in Tokyo for one month.

Average monthly cost of living
The national average monthly cost of living in Japan is:
105.000 yen = 570 € = 675 $
In Tokyo:
130.000 yen = 710 € = 835 $
(1 € = 185 yen ; 1 $ = 155 yen)

Part-time job with a student visa
In Japan, 67% if international students engage in part-time work. You will be allowed to work up to 28 hours per week (48 hours during school breaks).
65% of part-time workers find a job in restaurant businesses or sales jobs.
The average hourly wage is between 1000 yen and 1200 yen. In Tokyo, the minimum hourly wage is 1163 yen. So you can easily expect to work at 1200 yen for one hour of work.
If you maximize your schedule and work 28 hours for 4 weeks at the minimum wage, you can potentially earn up to 130.000 yen per month while working as a part-time worker in Tokyo.

What budget should I expect?
The Japanese government recommends students prepare at least 1 million yen for every 6 months of study. Students usually enroll for a one year program. In that case, the budget for one year of study is around 2.000.000 yen (11.000 € ; 12.900 $). (This includes tuition fees, accommodation and living costs)
Should I prepare savings for healthcare?
No, with a student visa, you will have to apply for the Japanese National Health Insurance that will cover 70% of all your health bills. The premiums depends on your income in Japan from the previous year. So it will be very cheap for you when you just arrived in Japan. Usually 2000 yen to 4000 yen per month.
The school insurance will cover the rest of the healthcare bills.
